OpenAI's GPT-4 'Exhibits Human-Level Performance' and Will React to Picture and Text Inputs

The firm behind the ChatGPT app, which generates essays, poetry, and computer code on command, unveiled a long-awaited upgrade to its artificial intelligence (AI) technology on Tuesday, claiming that it is safer and more accurate than its predecessor.

GPT-4 has been eagerly anticipated since ChatGPT debuted in late November, surprising users with its powers based on an older version of OpenAI's technology known as a big language model.

"We've launched GPT-4, the next milestone in OpenAI's endeavour to scale up deep learning," according to a company blog, adding that the AI system "exhibits human-level performance" on various professional and academic activities.

The model, according to the corporation, is "more creative and collaborative than ever before" and will "address challenging issues with better accuracy" than previous iterations.

Text replies from GPT-4 will be more accurate with the upgrade, and will come from both picture and text inputs in the future, in a significant leap forward for the technology, but this component has not yet been revealed.

For example, if a user sends a photo of the contents of a refrigerator, GPT-4 will not only properly identify what is inside, but will also suggest what may be made with those items.

OpenAI stated that it was preparing the next advancement in collaboration with a partner firm, Be My Eyes.

Most of the new model's firepower is now available to the general public via ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI's premium membership plan, and a beta version of Microsoft's Bing search engine.

OpenAI is supported by Microsoft, which said earlier this year that it will invest billions of dollars in the research firm.

The technology was quickly implemented into Microsoft's Bing search engine, Edge browser, and other products.

Microsoft's aggressive use of ChatGPT has created a competition with Google, which has launched its own versions of the AI technology, with Amazon, Baidu, and Meta also jumping in, desperate not to be left behind.

There will be less 'hallucinations.'
The new version, according to OpenAI, is significantly less likely to go off the rails than the previous version, which had widely publicised encounters with ChatGPT or Bing's chatbot in which users were presented with falsehoods, insults, or other so-called "hallucinations."

"We spent six months making GPT-4 more secure and aligned. GPT-4 is 82% less likely to react to requests for prohibited content and 40% more likely to answer with factual responses "According to OpenAI.

"I'm not sure I want an AI to filter answers on unrelated topics... Should an AI determine whether or not I smoke?" Vesoul explained to AFP.

Morgan Stanley is another participant in the GPT-4 implementation, and it will employ AI to help advise its bankers and their clients.

"You get the expertise of the most knowledgeable person in Wealth Management—instantly," Morgan Stanley's Jeff McMillan said in a statement.

Other partners include the online teaching company Khan Academy and Stripe, a banking software that will employ GPT-4 to combat fraud and for other purposes.
